The series was created by Whitney Blake and Allan Manings, a married couple who are both actors in the 1950s and 1960s. The series is based on Whitney Blake's own life as a single mother, raising her three children (including actress Meredith Baxter) after her divorce from her first husband.

Plot

Ann Romano, a divorced mother, moved from their home in Logansport, Indiana, to Indianapolis with her two daughters, Julie's rebellious, and Barbara who likes to muck. Ann often struggles with maintaining her role as a mother while giving freedom to her daughter that she never had as a young woman. Ann starts dating her divorce lawyer, David Kane (Richard Masur). They got engaged and canceled it on their wedding day, when David said he wanted the kids, but Ann did not. Dwayne Schneider, the unique building superintendent (most often referred to simply by his last name), usually gives unwanted advice to tenants.

After David took a job in Los Angeles, his focus was on Ann's dilemma as a single mother and career woman, as well as the pain of the girls, with Schneider being a better part of the family. Ann's tense relationship with her ex-husband, Ed, was slowly improving, as did the girls' relationship with his new wife, Vickie. Julie and Barbara advanced through high school and into work, and Julie finally married flight attendant Max Horvath. Alex, the orphan of Ann's late girlfriend, moved away, changing the dynamics in a female-dominated apartment. Later on in the running series, Julie gave birth to a daughter, "Little Annie" Horvath, Barbara married Mark Royer medical student, and Ann Katherine's mother moved nearby.

In the second episode from behind, Ann decides to take a job in London, leaving her daughter in Indianapolis to raise their own family. In the final series, Schneider also left town, moved to Florida to take care of his nephew and nephew.

Production

For the entire trip, the series was recorded in Hollywood before the studio audience. Originally, it was recorded on CBS Television City. Shortly after the premiere, the series began recording on Metromedia Square, where it remained until 1982. From 1982 to 1984, the series was recorded at Universal Studios.

Like many sitcoms developed by Norman Lear, One Day at a Time often deals with serious issues in life and relationships, especially those associated with second wave feminism. Stories depicting events like marriage, birth, and other important milestones often stretch during episodes two, three, and four parts.

Theme song and opening credit

The theme song for One Day at a Time, "composed by Brill Building songwriter Jeff Barry and his wife Nancy Barry, and performed by recording artist Polly Cutter. The opening credit was initially seen above the movie sequence showing Ann, Julie, and Barbara eagerly moving into their new home. Then, the credit opening order consists mostly of clips from each member of the player taken from the previous episode.

Casting

Actors Bonnie Franklin, Pat Harrington, Jr., and Valerie Bertinelli are the only players left to stay with this series throughout the whole. The main actress Mackenzie Phillips was fired after the fifth season due to a growing problem with substance abuse. He then returns in a recurring role. The original cast member Richard Masur was written at the start of the second season, but returned as a guest star at the end of the sixth season.

After Masur's departure, the producers tried to go in different directions. Instead of Ann Romano being romantically involved with a man, it was decided to give Ann a comedy foil. For the role, producer Lear chose actress and comedian Mary Louise Wilson, who recently completed a successful run on Broadway as Tessie Tura in a Gypsy revival starring Angela Lansbury. Wilson signed to play Ginny Wroblicki, a cocktail waiter who moved into Schneider's apartment building, and soon became Ann's best friend and confidante. The events' ratings began to decline immediately after Wilson's arrival, as the character Ginny Wroblicki proved unpopular with viewers. According to his memoir, My Hundred Years in Show Business , before being cast as Ginny, Wilson never saw One Day at a Time and immediately sat down and watched the one-night episode in his apartment. He did not find the sitcom funny at all and was not given a script until the first reading of his first episode. Wilson is also incompatible with Franklin, "who takes his role as a referee on moral issues very seriously" and who considers himself "our leading authority on Broadway". He also thinks that Harrington's character from Schneider is not at all funny, though he likes Harrington himself, and finds him cute off the screen. Wilson writes that "apart from Lear, no one thinks I am funny... To make matters worse, each character, according to the formula of events, must have a 'serious' moral dilemma at some point, and I am given some the problem of illegitimate children working in this increasingly sentimental scene that makes my stomach shrink. "At the end of the second season of One Day at a Time, Wilson begged his agent to ask Lear to release him from his contract. Wilson later admitted, "I feel so wrong to be so miserable I know this is the kind of break the actor wants." Wilson is also not accustomed to working on a sitcom with four cameras in front of a live audience where "you say your line when the red light in the camera continues... and there after a longer pause than the Styx river before the light turns. You speak say the next line. After meeting with his agent, Wilson impulsively changed his mind and agreed to stick with the series, but it was too late. His agent had informed Norman Lear about Wilson's unhappiness and he was released from the show after appearing in 14 episodes. The character Ginny Wroblicki is never seen, referred to, or heard again except in the fifth episode of the season ("Retrospective") consists primarily of clips from the previous series.

For the next two seasons, leading actresses Ann, Julie, Barbara, and Schneider are featured with recurring characters, including William Kirby Cullen as girlfriend Julie Chuck Butterfield, Howard Morton and K Callan as Chuck's parents, John Putch as Barbara's awkward friend Bob Morton , Scott Colomby as lover Barbara Cliff Randall, and John Hillerman and Charles Siebert as boss Ann. Connors and Mr. Davenport, respectively. Dick O'Neill and Nedra Volz made three appearances together as Orville and Emily, the nursing home residents where the main characters appear on the semifegular variety show. Joseph Campanella also made several appearances as her ex-husband and the father, Ed Cooper.

Michael Lembeck joined this series as Julie's husband, Max, in the fifth season, but he was written as a consequence of the Phillips shooting (but then back in the seventh season along with Philips). Regular flows were added in the following season, including Ron Rifkin as Ann's girlfriend, Nick; Glenn Scarpelli as Nick's son, Alex; and Boyd Gaines as Barbara's girlfriend, then her husband, Mark. Shelley Fabares, formerly a guest star when Ann's colleague Francine Webster, appeared more often, eventually becoming a regular. Nanette Fabray, who plays Ann's mother, also made more appearances before becoming a regular player in the last season. Howard Hesseman joins the series for a short time as Mark's father, Sam, who will become Ann's second husband.

Peringkat

One Day at a Time was best known in 1980 as a staple of the CBS Sunday-night lineup, one of the most successful in TV history, along with Archie Bunker's Place Alice , and The Jeffersons.

The series is consistently ranked among the top twenty (if not top ten) programs in the rankings. However, the network moved the show around on the prime time schedule eleven times. At the end of the 1982-83 season, viewers began slipping and the series ended in the eighth season ranking at No. 1. 16. At this time, Bonnie Franklin and Valerie Bertinelli are eager to continue, but agree to do the ninth (and end). (Although both are offered a contract for two more seasons: ninth and tenth according to Bertinelli in his autobiography Losing It: And Getting My Life Back One Pound at a Time .)
