In 1990, Bruno was at the center of many controversies who believed in the longtime career of Hampden District Attorney Matthew Ryan Jr. when a top Ryan aide accused DA of being lenient with the mob like Bruno. Ryan, who is often a partner of Bruno's concoction, denied the allegations but resigned that year.

In 1991, Bruno was released from attempted murder in a gang-related shooting in Agawam, Massachusetts. Prosecutors claimed that Bruno and his co-defendant John J. "Jake" Nettis shot the convicted bassist Joseph Maruca in a warehouse owned by Bruno's brother Frank. State prosecutors use Philadelphia's crime family lawyer Phil Leonetti as government witnesses. Nettis was sentenced and received nine to ten years' imprisonment.

In 1993, Vito Ricciardi, the Springfield barber, shot Bruno twice outside the social club of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Society in Springfield. But Bruno should wear a bulletproof vest and survive the shootings. Ricciardi later said that he shot Bruno because he had been attacked for unpaid debts.

In 1996, Bruno and Francesco J. "Skyball" Scibelli was sentenced to 15 months in prison for illegal gambling.
