Palimony is the distribution of financial assets and real property on the termination of a private live-in relationship in which the parties are not legally married. The term "palimony" is not a legal or historical term, but rather a daily portmanteau of the words pal and allowances created by celebrity divorce attorney Marvin Mitchelson in 1977 when his client Michelle Triola Marvin filed an unsuccessful lawsuit against actor Lee Marvin. While the lawsuit was unsuccessful in this regard, the court found that "in the absence of a clear agreement, the court may see other solutions to equitably divide the property." It is unclear how many countries today expressly forbid any kind of palimoni to be granted - that is - how many countries allow both partners in unmarried cohabitation to explicitly keep everything under their own names including income and property, but these are many recommended by law offices around the country that, before committing to unmarried but romantic cohabitation, couples must enter into a legal cohabitation agreement before moving on together.

Unlike allowances, which are normally provided by law, palimoni is not guaranteed for unmarried couples. There must be a clear, written or oral agreement, by both partners that establishes the extent to which the financial distribution or support for palimoni is given. Palimony cases are set in civil courts as a matter of contract rather than in family courts as in the case of a divorce. In the State of New Jersey, palimoni cases are tried in Family Court.
In states that recognize palimony, there are differences in factors considered by courts and the weight of these factors is given:
- Cohabitation,
- Long relationship,
- Commitment between partners who will financially provide for others to live,
- Provable interpersonal promise,
- Written financial agreement,
- The ability of the plaintiff to support themselves financially,
- Unleash a career to provide services like home or child care,
- Sacrifices made by one partner to place another partner through lectures and
- Differences in revenue.
An oral or implied contract is often considered as well.
In 1983, only three countries legally rejected palimony, but, by 2016, twenty-four countries legitimately rejected palimony.

Marvin v. Marvin
Michelle Triola spent several years living with actor Lee Marvin. After their breakup, he formally adopted Marvin's surname even though he never married him and claimed that he had promised to support him for the rest of his life. In the end, at Marvin v. Marvin , the California Supreme Court ruled that Triola did not prove a contract between him and Mr. Marvin gave him an interest in his property. Thus, the general rule of law applies to situations without change, and he takes away from what relationships and households he brings to him.
The court went on to explain that while the state abolished the marriage of common law in 1896, California law recognized the contract of non-marital relations. These contracts may be express or implied, verbal or written, but they shall be provable in any case. The contract may also provide intercourse as long as it is not a contract for sexual services. Finally, the California Court of Appeal decided that, since Michelle Triola and Lee Marvin never had a contract, she was not entitled to any money.
Famous cases
- The rock musician Peter Frampton was sued by Penelope J. "Penny" McCall in 1976. McCall asked half of Frampton's earnings for five years that they were together. According to McCall, he relinquished his job as a rock promoter and devoted himself full-time to Frampton, just as he reached superstar status. A New York judge ruled that Frampton and McCall never intended to marry each other and "never considered themselves public as husband and wife" and refused to complain on the grounds that to act otherwise would allow for adultery. This case set a precedent in New York state.
- Billie Jean King's tennis player was sued by Marilyn Barnett in 1981.
- Tennis player Martina Navratilova was sued by Judy Nelson in 1991. In 1996, Van Cliburn was sued by former colleague Thomas Zaremba for part of his income and assets after a 17-year relationship ending in 1994. The case of Zaremba's palinda was dismissed for lack of a written agreement, along with a claim for emotional distress. and Cliburn made her afraid of AIDS through an allegedly unprotected Cliburn relationship with a third party.
- In 2004, comedian Bill Maher was sued for US $ 9 million by his ex-boyfriend Nancy "Coco" Johnsen. On May 2, 2005, a California Superior Court judge dismissed the case.

Country song singer Leon Rausch "Palimony" fell to # 81 on the Billboard Country chart in 1980.
Stuck with you! is a 1982 comedy film that follows the estranged couple Bill and Carol, who are in a palimoni suit with each other.
In the 1996 film The Birdcage, adapted from the drama La Cage Aux Folles, Albert Goldman (played by Nathan Lane) sought the palimony approval of his partner Armand Goldman (Robin Williams).
Palimony was used as a form of revenge by Bridgette Wilson's character, Chelsea Turner, against her character character Seth Winnick (played by French Stewart) in the 1999 Love i Stinks movie.
Included in the liner notes for the Bon Jovi album Slippery When Wet is a thank you to the group's "expensive lawyers" to help them negotiate payment of benefits and palimony.
Finding palimoni is an option considered by Jane Bingum (Brooke Elliott) lawyer during the episode of Drop Dead Diva, where a man marries two women. Women eventually choose to sue their husbands for fraud.
