Robert Morel Montgomery Jr. (June 9, 1930 - August 3, 2008) is an American lawyer known for winning large settlements, including the State of Florida v. American Tobacco Co., et al. , in which the tobacco industry agreed to pay $ 11.3 billion to recover Medicaid costs for smoking-related illnesses.
Montgomery was born in Birmingham, Alabama, where his father was a criminal defense lawyer. He graduated from the University of Alabama, became a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity, then spent two years in the United States Army. He holds a law degree from the University of Florida Law School under G.I. Bill.
After representing the insurance company, he switched to litigation on behalf of the plaintiff, often taking high profile cases. When Kimberly Bergalis developed AIDS from her dentist, Montgomery won an undisclosed solution. He won a $ 10.5 million settlement per year for Kathleen DuRoss Ford, Henry Ford II's third wife. He represents Burt Reynolds in his divorce with Loni Anderson. Despite being a Democrat, Montgomery represents an old friend Theresa LePore, whose "butterfly ballot" design in Palm Beach County was criticized during the 2000 US presidential election.
He died at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
