Careers
Before finding the elected office, Dunnings began his career at his father's law firm, Dunnings and Frawley, where he became a partner for 16 years. From 1987 to 1996 he was a member of the bar for the Michigan Establishment Committee on Character and Fitness, and from 1989 to 1998 served as Assistant Professor of Law at Thomas M. Cooley Law School.
Dunnings was first elected as Ingham District Attorney in November 1996, defeating the powerful Donald Martin. He was recently re-elected for a fifth term in 2012. He has built a reputation by cracking down on prostitution, sexual violence, domestic violence, and the sex trade.
Legal issues
On March 14, 2016, Dunnings was charged with one count of pandering, which was a major crime, and 14 allegations of violation; ten of the prostitutes involved and four of the deliberate neglect of duty. Following the indictment, he was placed on a "medical leave" with his job taken over by Chief Prosecutor Lisa McCormick. He has announced his resignation effective July 2, 2016.
In May 2016, Gretchen Whitmer was appointed as a temporary Ingham District Attorney, assuming the role of Dunnings to the end of his term, which ends January 1, 2017.
On August 2, 2016, Dunnings pleaded guilty to one count of offenses in the office (five-year crime) and the number of violations of prostitution service involvement, as part of a plea deal with the Michigan office of Attorney General Bill Schuette. In exchange for a plea of ââguilt, Schuette's office will dismiss a total of 14 allegations relating to prostitution, including pandering indictments, which carry a maximum of 20 years in prison. The legal license is then suspended.
In November 2016, Dunnings was sentenced to three years probation, with his first year in jail. While still serving a prison term, the Council of Attorney General's Discipline officially reached it on July 11, 2017 and on July 18 the US District Court and the US Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Michigan forbade him to practice.
To avoid any conflicts or security issues at Ingham County Jail, where he sent countless defendants for two decades in his office, Dunnings served his time in the Clinton State Prison. He was released from prison two months early due to good behavior after midnight on September 24, 2017.
