Edward Shippen (February 16, 1729 - April 15, 1806) is a lawyer, judge, government official, and prominent figure in post-revolution Philadelphia and Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania.

Shippen was born in Philadelphia, son of merchant Edward Shippen III. He studied law from Tench Francis, Pennsylvania's attorney general. He married the daughter of his teacher, Margaret Francis in 1753, with whom he had nine children. In 1748 he went to London to complete his legal studies in the Central Temple, and, upon returning to Philadelphia, was accepted at the bar. He was appointed judge of the admiralty court in 1755. Three years later he was elected to the general city council. In 1762 he was appointed as the prothonotary of the supreme court, a post maintained until the Revolution. He became a member of the Provincial Council of Pennsylvania in 1770.

Shippen tried to remain neutral in the American Revolution, hoping that colonies and first ladies would be reconciled. He did not support the extension of royal authority and was therefore not a Loyalist, but he also opposed the radically democratic Pennsylvania 1776 Constitution, which sought to reduce government support by powerful families such as the Shippens.

He received in 1790 LL.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was the guardian of 1791 until his death. He is also a member of the American Philosophical Society.

In 1791, he was appointed to the High Court of Pennsylvania, serving alongside Jasper Yeates and Edward Burd, both male and former students. Shippen became the supreme judge in 1799, but in 1804 was dismissed for weak political reasons. The next year the Pennsylvania Senate released her and her colleagues. Shippen retired to private life and died shortly thereafter, on 15 April 1806 in Philadelphia at the age of 77.

Her fourth daughter, Margaret Shippen, was Benedict Arnold's second wife.
