Born in Boise, Idaho and raised in Katy, Texas, he attended Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah. He graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 1993.

After graduation, Dehlin worked for five years in software and as a consultant to Bain & amp; Company, Arthur Andersen, Citicorp, Heidrick & amp; Struggle, and the LDS Church. He then worked at Microsoft for seven years in a program for developers, marketing, speech technology, and product demos. Dehlin's brother, Joel Dehlin, also worked at Microsoft, and became the primary information officer of the LDS Church in 2004.

In 2004, Dehlin moved to Logan, Utah, to begin work under David A. Wiley at Utah State University (USU) on projects related to OpenCourseWare. Dehlin will serve two years as Coordinator of the USU OpenCourseWare Consortium and Outreach Director for the Open and Sustainable Learning Center, promoting OpenCourseWare to other universities, and a few years as director of the OpenCourseWare Consortium for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. New media

Sunstone

During his early career Dehlin developed a large open online course (MOOCs) he has branched into the new medium of Latter-day Saint themed. Dehlin approached the Sunstone Education Foundation and presented to the Board of Directors the importance of participating in developing the internet community through blogging and podcasting, to address the limited Internet presence of Mormon's constructive intellectual resources. The Council accepted its offer to start these programs and, in September 2005, Dehlin joined the Board of Directors and initiated the Sunstone podcast and SunstoneBlog . In July 2007, he also became executive director of the Sunstone Education Foundation, where he will focus on strategic initiatives to strengthen Sunstone's position as an open forum for Mormon problems. In that role, it enhances the organization's focus on the old motto, "faith seeking understanding", and works to attract new and younger members. Dehlin resigned from Sunstone in January 2008.

Mormon Stories

In September 2005, having experienced doubts in his faith and then finding reasons to remain a member of the LDS Church, Dehlin created the Mormon Story podcast as an open discussion of the Mormon problem, intending to give the listener reasons to stay in church. Through interviews, Mormon Stories focuses on Mormon experiences and perspectives. Mormon Stories has been featured in many places, including broadcast on KVNU in Logan, Utah.

Conflicting intermittently about continuing Mormon Stories , Dehlin paused and restarted the project several times. In January 2010 Dehlin continued blogs and podcasts, focusing on the crisis of faith and mental illness. This podcast features many famous guests, starting with Joanna Brooks and John C. Hamer interviews. Two other regular hosts joined Dehlin in interviewing for podcasts: Dan Wotherspoon, former editor of Sunstone magazine; and Natasha Helfer Parker, a licensed marriage and family therapist.

Other blogs

In June 2007, Dehlin started Mormon Matters as a blog and a weekly podcast. The format is a discussion panel on events, culture, politics, and spirituality in Mormonism. The panelists represent the different sides of each issue, although the performances then struggle to maintain the regular conservative LDS panelists. In early 2008, Dehlin converted Mormon Matters into a group blog and reduced the emphasis on new podcast episodes. Dehlin continued the Mormon Matters podcast on March 5, 2011 with Dan Wotherspoon as host, and Joanna Brooks as a frequent co-host.

Dehlin is also one of the founders of the pro-LGBT website Mormons for Marriage . He also co-founded Stay LDS , a community dedicated to helping unorthodox Mormons live in the LDS Church.

In 2016 Dehlin began blogging on the non-partisan religious web site of Patheos.com in the current dialogue/issues format with Mormon study scholars, Patrick Q. Mason, who has advocated for more ethos in Mormonism.

Personal practice, scholarships, and presentations

Around 2015, when he became a doctoral candidate, and after receiving his doctorate, Dehlin gave a presentation on his research and interests. During this period, Dehlin began giving to a small number of personal coaching clients and their families through the crisis and transition of their Latter-day Saint faith. Scientific work Dehlin et al. About same-sex attraction is widely publicized. Dehlin has been criticized by mental health professional Jacob Hess for Dehlin's alleged bias about the hope of LDS gay individuals to remain mentally healthy while remaining within the LDS faith community.

Faith

From 1988 to 1990, Dehlin served as a missionary of the LDS Church in Guatemala. During this time his mission began baptizing up to 700 converts every month using practices he believed to be deceptive. After reporting this to an apostle, Dallin H. Oaks, Dehlin was transferred and completed his two-year missionary term in Tempe, Arizona. Dehlin remains active, loyal member of LDS Church for the next 20 years.

In the Spring of 2011, Dehlin declared he became inactive in the LDS Church (ie, not attending weekly services), citing the inability to trust some church claims. In 2014, Dehlin was investigated by local church leaders about his online activities, culminating in a demand by Dehlin for greater privacy.

Prior to 2014, Dehlin had faced a church disciplinary hearing with no results of disciplinary action. In January 2015, stake president Dehlin embarked on another disciplinary council, which determined Dehlin's online activity was apostasy. He was excommunicated for "doing against the law and order of the church." Dehlin appealed to the First Presidency on March 10, 2015, declaring his actions do not meet the definition of apostate church. In July and August 2015, the First Presidency informed Dehlin through his stake president about his appeal.
