Histori
The Attacapas Native Americans inhabit this area at a European meeting. The French colony established the first European settlement, Petit Manchac , a trading post along the Vermilion River. In the late 18th century, many Acadian refugees settled in this area, after being expelled from Canada after the Great Britain defeated France in the Seven Years War. They married other settlers, forming what is known as the Cajun culture, which continues as a strong French and Catholicism.
Jean Mouton, a descendant of Acadian, donated the land to a Catholic church for the construction of a small Catholic chapel on this site. In 1824 the area was chosen for the Lafayette Parish chair and was known as Vermilionville, because of its location on the river. In 1836 the Louisiana Legislature granted it.
This area was developed for agriculture, especially sugarcane plantations, which depend on the labor of many enslaved Africans and a large percentage of the pre-war population. According to US Census data, 41 percent of the Lafayette Parish population was enslaved in 1830, and that number increased to 49.6 percent in 1860. The percentage of color-free people live in Lafayette Parish as well, reaching 3 percent to a low of 2.4 percent between 1830 and 1860.
In 1884, Vermilionville was renamed General Lafayette, a French noble who had fought with and significantly assisted the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. The city and parish economy continued to be based on agriculture until the early 20th century. After the Civil War, much of this work was done by the liberated, who worked as a production-sharing farmer. In the 20th century, agricultural mechanization reduced the need for agricultural workers.
In the 1940s, once oil was found in the parish, the oil and natural gas industries became dominant.
Lafayette is considered the center of Acadiana, the cultural area of ââCajun and Louisiana Creole in the state. It was developed after the relocation of the Indians after their expulsion by the British from eastern Canada at the end of the 18th century after the French defeat in the Seven Years War. There is also a strong Louisiana Creole influence in the area, as this mixed race population becomes landlords and entrepreneurs.
