Histori

This area was originally developed as a train stop between Saint Paul, Minnesota and Dubuque, Iowa. When Winona and St Peter Railroad started service in October 1864, it brought new residents and business opportunities increasingly spurring growth and expansion. In 1863, Dr. William W. Mayo arrived as an examining surgeon for Union Union union members in the Civil War. The community is named after Rochester, New York by emigrants from the area. Rochester celebrated sesquicentennial in 2004.

On August 21, 1883, the Great Tornado destroyed much of Rochester, leaving 37 people dead and about 200 wounded. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, George H. W. Bush, Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan, have visited Rochester as patients at the Mayo Clinic. Rochester has also been hit by two F4 tornadoes since 1950 (the first on May 10, 1953 and the other on September 16, 1962).
