Timothy Edward "The" Mahoney "team (born August 16, 1956) is a former US Representative for Florida's 16th congress district and member of the Democratic Party. He was elected in November 2006 after his opponent, six months former Prime Minister Mark Foley, resigned on September 29, 2006, after a question was asked about an email exchange with a congressional page.

In October 2008, the media channel began reporting allegations that Mahoney paid the lonely money to the mistress to conceal extramarital affairs.

Tim Mahoney ran for re-election in 2008 but lost in Republican November 4 elections Tom Rooney.

Early life and career

Mahoney was born in Aurora, Illinois. He grew up in Summit, New Jersey, and graduated from Summit High School in 1974. He earned a bachelor's degree in computer science and business from West Virginia University in 1978 and M.B.A. from George Washington University in 1983.

Mahoney started his career in the computer business. After seven years, he gained a fortune when a company he worked for, Tecmar, selling personal computer accessories, was sold. In 1986, he moved to Florida and became president of Rodime Systems, a division of Rodime Inc. Rodime Inc., where Mahoney also became vice president of marketing and sales, created a packaged disc drive for the retail market by Rodime Systems. In 1995, Mahoney and his business partner, Lenny Sokolow, started Union Atlantic, LLC, a venture capital company. His inability to get a company listed on vFinance.com, a budding matchmaking website for venture capitalists and money-laden businessmen, took him and Sokolow to buy the website in 1998, combining it with Union Atlantic.

Mahoney serves as chairman and chief operating officer of vFinance, Inc., a financial services firm located in Boca Raton. vFinance initially grew quickly after purchasing several other broker-dealers and financial services customers, and during its final year with the company reported revenues of more than $ 38 million. Sokolow replaced Mahoney as chairman and COO in 2007.

AS. Congress

Mahoney has been a Republican for most of his life, but became a Democrat in the summer of 2005 after being suspected of being disappointed by the GOP.

2006 campaign

In the 2006 election, Mahoney faced six-period holder of Republican Mark Foley. In a historical twist, Foley has been a Democrat for most of his life before switching the party to run for Congress. In 2006, 42% of voters in this district were registered as Republicans, and 36% were registered as Democrats. George W. Bush won this district with 52% of the vote in the 2000 presidential election, and with 54% of the vote in the 2004 presidential election. A poll taken by Hamilton Beattie on September 12, 2006, led Foley to lead the Mahoney 48% to 35%.

In the campaign, Mahoney sharply criticized the Bush administration for excessive spending, mismanagement, and policy in Iraq. In August, General Wesley Clark supported Mahoney.

On September 28, 2006, ABC News reported that Foley had sent an email message, from his personal AOL account, to a 16-year-old former congress page, asking the page to send a picture of himself to Foley, among other things being sexually open. After the Republican leadership said Foley that he would face almost certain expulsion from the House, Foley resigned the next day. The Republicans' hold on the chairs went from "safe" to "shaking" overnight.

On October 2, 2006, the Florida Republican Executive Council selected Country Representative Joe Negron as a new opponent of Mahoney. However, the name Negron does not appear on the ballot; he only received a vote for Foley, whose name remains on the ballot by law. On election day, Mahoney narrowly lost from Negron with 1.8 percentage points. While Negron brings most of the more conservative territory in the district near Fort Myers, Mahoney brings two of the largest districts in the district, Palm Beach and St. Lucie, with a combined margin of over 10,000 votes - is far more than the actual margin of victory.

Mahoney was the first Democrat to represent the district since its formation in 1973 (it was dubbed the 10th District from 1973 to 1983, and as the 12th District from 1983 to 1993).

elections 2008

Mahoney has been a prime target for defeat in 2008, due to the history of Republican district voting. In addition, the disclosure of extramarital affairs (see below) severely inhibits re-election opportunities. In the November election, Mahoney was defeated by former assistant attorney general, Tom Rooney. Mahoney won just 40 percent of the vote to Rooney by 60 percent - the biggest loss margin for the incumbent on the 2008 cycle.

Problems and positions

Mahoney is generally regarded as a moderate Democrat, especially by the standards of South Florida Democrats. He has taken the following policy stance:

  • Homeland Security: Supports filtering of all cargo containers entering the American port, and increasing funding for first responders.
  • Immigration: Supports improved border security.
  • Seniors: Opposing Social Security Privatization. Supports reforming the Medicare Part D Drug Recipes Program.
  • Environment: Supporters conserve the Florida Everglades from unregulated development. Supports Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Project.
  • Insurance: Supports disaster insurance coverage for high risk areas. National disaster fund advocacy on the Financial Services Committee.
  • Support the Farm, Nutrition, and Bioenergy Act of 2007.

He is a member of the Blue Dog Coalition, a group of Democratic congressmen (mostly from the South) known for his moderate and conservative stance, especially in fiscal matters.

On September 29, 2008, Mahoney voted for the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008.

Sex Residencies and Scandals

On September 18, 2008, the Capitol Hill newspaper Roll Call posted an article asking Mahoney residency status. It alleged that Mahoney had signed up to vote in "stables" for the purpose of owning a residence in the Congress District, while his main residence was actually in another district. The issue was revealed after Mahoney missed a rent payment at Capitol Hill's apartment in July 2007. The case itself was dismissed on September 6, 2007. While Mahoney's opponent, Tom Rooney, sought to alleviate the allegations, the attack proved ineffective. after the Democratic Party revealed that Rooney himself was registered to vote on the dog trail. While members of the House are only required to live in the country they wish to represent, it has become a strong convention that they live in or near the districts they represent as well.

On October 13, 2008, ABC News reported that Mahoney had approved a $ 121,000 payment to a former saver who worked on his staff and threatened to sue him. Since Mahoney won this seat in 2006 after the sex scandal forced the petahana to resign, some consider it ironic that his own sex scandal happened one month before the election, especially since he first campaigned against such corruption. Some professional political experts, such as Charlie Cook, reclassify the race as "Leans Republican." The FBI see if Mahoney hired the first mistress - and put him on a federal payroll - so he will not reveal his affair.

Mahoney claims to have "many" affairs, "certainly more than two." Mahoney's wife, Terry, filed for divorce in Palm Beach County court on October 20, 2008. As mentioned above, Mahoney was defeated for re-election.
