World War II has not ended long. Jack Chismore, a veteran who suffers from PTSD runs a gas station in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Jack is married to Lily, and Lily's stepfather's third daughter includes Rose, a teenager at an easy age. Lily's sister Starr had come to Las Vegas for a quick divorce and came to live with them, interrupting the routine of what had become a small and narrow house.
Lily got a job in the Atomic Testing Office and could not tell Jack, or the girls when the military tested an atom bomb in the desert area nearby. This angered and frustrated Jack, who ventured his anger at Rose over and over again.
When Rose runs away, Jack is the bravest and caring one.
