Elizabeth M. Gilbert (born July 18, 1969) is an American author, essayist, short story writer, biographer, novelist and memoirist. He is best known for his 2006 memoirs, Eat, Pray, Love , which in December 2010 spent 199 weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list, and also made the movie under the name same in 2010.

Gilbert was born in Waterbury, Connecticut. His father, John Gilbert, was a chemical engineer; his mother, Carole, is a housewife. He is of Swedish descent. Together with his only sister, novelist Catherine Gilbert Murdock, Gilbert grew up on a small family Christmas tree plantation in Litchfield, Connecticut. The family lives in a country without neighbors; they do not have a television or a record player. As a result, the family read many things, and Gilbert and his sister entertain themselves by writing books and dramas.
Gilbert earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science from New York University in 1991, after which he worked as a cook, bartender, waiter, and magazine employee. Journalism
Esquire published a short story of Gilbert "Pilgrims" in 1993, under the heading "The Debut of an Writer America". He is the first unpublished short story writer to debut on Esquire since Norman Mailer. This has resulted in permanent employment as a journalist for various national magazines, including SPIN , GQ , New York Times Magazine , Allure >, Real Simple , and Travel Leisure . As stated in the Eat, Pray, Love memoirs, Gilbert made a career as a highly paid freelance writer.

Gilbert's first book, Pilgrims (Houghton Mifflin 1997), a collection of short stories, received the Pushcart Prize and was a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award. This was followed by his novel Stern Men (Houghton Mifflin 2000), selected by The New York Times as an Important Book. In 2002, he published The Last American Man (2002), which was nominated for the National Book Award in non-fiction.
Eat, Pray, Love â â¬
In 2006, Gilbert published Eat, Pray, Love: A Women's Search for Everything in Italy, India and Indonesia (Viking, 2006), a record of the year his "spiritual and personal exploration" spent traveling overseas. He financed his world travel for a book with a $ 200,000 publisher advances after throwing a draft into a book proposal. The best sellers have been criticized by some writers as "priv-lit" and "calculated business decisions". The memoir was on the New York Times Best Seller of non-fiction list in the spring of 2006, and in October 2008, after 88 weeks, the book was still on the list at number 2. Gilbert appeared at > The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2007, and has reappeared at the event to discuss further his book and philosophy, and to discuss the film. He was named among the 100th most influential people in the world by TIME magazine. The book was selected for a film by Columbia Pictures, released as Eat Pray Love on August 13, 2010, with Julia Roberts starring as Gilbert.
Committed
Gilbert's fifth book, Committed: A Skeptic Made Peace with Marriage , released by Viking Press in January 2010. This book is somewhat of a sequel to Eat, Pray, Love in that it takes the life story Gilbert where his best-selling book stopped. Commit also revealed Gilbert's decision to marry Jose Nunes (referred to in the book as Felipe), a Brazilian man he met in Indonesia. This book is an examination of the institution of marriage from some historical and modern perspectives - including people, especially women, who are reluctant to marry. In the book, Gilbert also incorporates perspectives on same-sex marriage and compares it with racial marriages before the 1970s.
In 2012, he republished At Home on the Range, a cookbook of 1947 written by his great-grandmother, food columnist, Margaret Yardley Potter. Gilbert published his second novel, The Signature of All Things, in 2013.
Big Magic
In 2015, Gilbert publishes Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear, a self-help book that provides guidance on how to live a creative life like hers. The book is divided into six parts: Courage, Charm, Permission, Perseverance, Trust, and Divinity. Suggestions at Big Magic are focused on overcoming self-doubt, avoiding perfectionism, and setting the agenda, among other topics. Gilbert resumes work begun at Big Magic with his podcast Magic Lesson where he interviews famous artists including Brene Brown and Sarah Jones.
The review of Big Magic in Slate states that most of the suggestions in the book are facts, but that, "Gilbert came with a report from a new world in which countless grandeur lie awaits the brave and hard-working people enough to claim them.The unclear is how many succeed in his footsteps. The Seattle Times describes the book as, "funny, perceptive, and full of grounded advice. "
Literary influence
In an interview, Gilbert mentioned The Wizard of Oz with nostalgia, adding, "I am a writer today because I learned to love reading as a child - and mostly because of Oz's books..." He has said he was mainly influenced by Charles Dickens, and has noted this in many interviews. He identifies Marcus Aurelius's Meditations as his favorite book on philosophy. He also declared Jack Gilbert a "poet in my life" when he succeeded him as a writer-in-residence at the University of Tennessee in 2006.
Personal life
In a 2015 article for The New York Times titled "Confessions of a Seductict Addict," Gilbert wrote that he was "relieved from one intimate shackle to the next - dozens of them - without much as a day off between romance. "He admitted," Flirt has never been a regular sport for me, it's more like a theft, overpowering and urgent.I'll plan for months of robbery, searching for targets, looking for unattended entries, then I'll go into the dome deepest, stealing all of his emotional currency and spending it on myself. "
Gilbert married Michael Cooper, whom he met while working at Coyote Ugly Saloon, from 1994 to 2002.
In 2007, Gilbert married Jose Nunes, whom he met in Bali while on his way at Eat, Pray, Love . Gilbert and Nunes live in Frenchtown, New Jersey; together they run a large Asian import shop called Two Buttons. By 2015, the store is for sale.
In 2015, Gilbert and several other authors (including Cheryl Strayed) participated in fundraising efforts for Syrian refugees. They collected more than $ 1 million in 31 hours.
On July 1, 2016, Gilbert announced on his Facebook page that he and Nunes split up, saying that the split was "very friendly" and their reasoning was "very personal". On September 7, 2016, Gilbert published a Facebook post saying he was in contact with his best friend, author Rayya Elias, and that the relationship was related to his marriage breakup. The relationship begins because Gilbert realizes his feelings for Elias after the diagnosis of terminal Elias cancer. On June 6, 2017, the two celebrated a commitment ceremony with family and close friends. The ceremony is not legally binding. Elias died on January 4, 2018.
