In a study of the effect of relocation after divorce, the researchers found that parents who moved away from each other (with either a move or one move) had long-term effects on children. The researchers found a big difference in a divorced family where one parent moved out of the child; children (as students) receive less financial support from their parents than with divorced families where parents do not move. Children also feel more depressed associated with divorce and do not feel the emotional support of their parents. Relocation is defined as when parents move more than an hour from their children. Children from divorce where both parents live close together do not have this negative effect.

A longitudinal study by Judith Wallerstein reports the negative effects of long-term divorce on children.

Linda Waite analyzed the relationship between marriage, divorce and happiness using the National Family and Household Survey and found that unmarried married families were no happier than those who had lived together. One broad-based study also shows that people have easier recovery time after parent's death compared to divorce. This study reported that children who lose parents can usually achieve the same level of happiness as before death, whereas children of divorced parents often can not achieve the same level of happiness as before a divorce.

A child who is exposed to a divorce at an early age will show an effect later on. They may make a premature transition into adulthood such as leaving home or their own child's parents early on. The author recently argues that the great cost to children comes shortly afterwards: when they try to form a stable marriage itself. Parental divorce causes a child to have a lower trust in future relationships. Compared to children of married parents, children of divorced parents have a more positive attitude toward divorce and less favorable attitudes toward marriage.

Children of divorced parents have also been reported to be more likely to have behavioral problems than children of married parents and more likely to experience abuse than children in whole families.

In contrast to the negative outlook on marriage by affected children, Constance Ahrons, in Our Family: What the Growing Children Should Say about Divorce Parents, interviewed 98 families of divorced families because many subjects found some children saying, "I saw some things that my parents did and knew not to do that in my marriage and see how they treated each other and did not do that to my spouse and my children I know [ divorce] has made me more committed to my husband and children. "In the book For Better or For Worse: Divorce Reconsidered, Mavis Hetherington reports that not all children get very bad rates, and that divorce can actually help children living in high-conflict homes such as those who have domestic violence. A peaceful divorce has less impact on children than the divorce in question.

An article 2015 updated and confirmed the findings in a 2002 article in Clinical Child and Family Psychology Review. Both articles discuss the various health consequences for children of divorced parents. Research has claimed that people who have been in divorced families have higher levels of alcoholism and other substance abuse than those who have never divorced. Robert H. Coombs, Professor of Behavior at UCLA, reviewed over 130 studies that gauge how marital status affects personal well-being. The researchers also pointed out that children of divorced or separated parents:

  • Have higher levels of clinical depression - Family disturbances and low socioeconomic status in early childhood increase the long-term risk for severe depression.
  • Look for higher-priced formal psychiatric care
  • In the case of men, it is more likely to commit suicide and have lower life expectancy.
  • Acute infectious diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, parasitic diseases, respiratory diseases, and severe injuries.
  • Cancer - Married cancer patients are also more likely to recover from the divorced
  • StrokeÃ,
  • Heart problems
  • Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis
  • Increased risk of arthritis for later children
