Careers
The native Tennessee, county is not available. Sudduth was the city's finance director and from 1965 to 1973 became mayor of Lake Charles. He resigned with a year left in his tenure to take a director position in Port of Lake Charles. He was replaced by board member William Edwin "Bill" Boyer (c.1931-1999), a stepchild of former Governor Sam Houston Jones and brother Robert G. Jones, a former member of both houses at Louisiana State Legislature.
In his second year as mayor in 1966, Sudduth was questioned by Joseph B. Flanagan, a member of the city council regarding the existence of the city's sewerage council. Flanagan questioned the extension of the sewerage service beyond the city limits when Sudduth authorized a convenience store on West McNeese Street to use the main city with payments for attachments and thereafter annual fees. Flanagan claimed that the sewerage board should be consulted, but Sudduth denied that the council was no longer valid under the revised city charter. However, the attachment did not harm the city, Sudduth stressed. In 1967, the city council directed Sudduth to consider buying used buses for the city's ten-vehicle fleet at a cost of $ 26,000. That same year, Sudduth was asked why Lake Charles then did not have an African-American firefighter despite having several black police officers. He replied that while he had encouraged blacks to take the civil service exam, no one passed the selection.
On April 1, 1989, Sudduth returned as mayor when he overthrew Edward of the Democrat "Ed" Watson, 11,497 (55.2 percent) to 9,321 (44.8 percent). In 1990, Sudduth founded the Southwest Louisiana Women's Commission, Inc., with a regional mission "to empower women". Robert M. McHale, Jr., a native of Youngstown, Ohio, who came to Lake Charles via Chennault Air Force Base, is a town attorney under both Mayor Sudduth and Boyer. McHale also advises Port of Lake Charles and the City Housing Authority.
