History
The Governor's Mansion of the State of Nevada was built between 1908 and 1909. Until then, the Nevada governors and their families found lodging where they could be in or near Carson City, the capital. Bill 10 State Assembly, "Mansion Bill," was passed in 1907 to secure a permanent place and residence for the Governor's Mansion. Mrs. T.B. Rickey sells land where this house now stands in the State of Nevada for $ 10, and George A. Ferris, a Reno architect, designed a house with Classical Awakening features and a Georgian and Georgian motif, and a construction offer was awarded for $ 22,700. Acting Governor of Denver S. Dickerson and his family were the first inhabitants when they occupied the big house in July 1909. The building was first opened to the public during the open house on New Year's Day, 1910. The governor's daughter, June Dickerson, was born in the mansion on September 2 1909, and is the only child born in the mansion.
The house is at the center of a legal dispute due to divorce from Governor Jim Gibbons and his ex-wife, Dawn. A few months before filing for divorce in May 2008, the Governor moved from the big house, back to the couple's private residence in Reno. After filing for divorce, he filed a petition requesting the expulsion of his wife from the house, citing state laws requiring the Governor to maintain his home and office in the state capital. Mrs Gibbons challenged the request, citing the desire to continue to fulfill her duties as First Lady and instead offer to stay in the mansion's guest house, which would allow her husband to live separately in the main house. Furthermore, his lawyers also cite state laws that allow divorced couples to share whatever value is enjoyed by both parties until the divorce is resolved. After their divorce, Gibbons Gibbons moved back to the mansion, and Dawn Gibbons moved into an apartment in Las Vegas.
