Paula Dean Broadwell (nÃÆ' Â © e Kranz , born November 9, 1972) is a writer, academician and former American military officer. He has served in the US Army on active and spare duties for over 20 years, with academic and intelligence experience in over 70 countries. In 2012, he co-authored, with Vernon Loeb, All In: Education General David Petraeus, the biography of the commander of the International Security Assistance Force David Petraeus with whom he had an unmarried affair. He is a co-founder and co-director of the Think Broader Foundation, a media consulting firm focused on addressing gender bias in the media and society.

Early life and education
Born and raised as Paula Dean Kranz in Bismarck, North Dakota, she studied at Upper Secondary School, where she became a housewife, 1991 class breaker, and All-State basketball player. His father was a teacher and high school coach and successful cattle rancher. In 2006 he was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Century High School.
Broadwell graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science degree in political engineering and geography. He earned a Master of Arts degree in international security from the University of Denver at Josef Korbel School of International Studies in 2006. He holds a Master of Public Administration from John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 2008. Broadwell is a Research Associate at Kennedy School's The Center for Public Leadership Fellows, a long term member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Leading Young Leader at the French-American Foundation and the American Council in Germany, and a national finalist in the White House Fellows program. He was elected Harvard student representative to the Academy of Achievement in 2006. During this time, he also worked at The Fletcher School at Tufts University as Deputy Director of the Jebsen Center on Counter-Terrorism. In 2008, he entered the PhD program in the Department of War Studies at King's College London. In February 2014 Broadwell was listed as a "former student" perhaps without receiving a Ph.D. His principal supervisor at KCL was Lawrence Freedman.

Careers
Broadwell served in the United States Army and US Army Reserve as a military intelligence officer on four different continents, serving in the discipline of electronic warfare, document exploitation, analysis and counter-terrorism operations, and human intelligence work. He rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel in the Reserve in August 2012. In February 2013 it was reported that the Army had revoked Broadwell's promotion to the lieutenant colonel. He is classified as unqualified for promotion as it is being investigated by the Army for the petraeus affair scandal. It is also reported that he will not be eligible for promotion until the investigation is fully completed.
Broadwell applied for a position with the FBI in 2001, passing the polygraph, academic, and life experience requirements. A retired FBI agent quoted by The Daily Beast suggested that the FBI would be most impressed with his qualifications and experience. The FBI offered him a job, but Broadwell decided to go to Harvard University.
Broadwell met Petraeus in 2006 when he was a speaker at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He was a graduate student at the University of Denver at that time. According to The Charlotte Observer , he told him about his research interests after he spoke. He hands over his business card and offers his help. He started his doctoral dissertation which included his leadership case study, with Petraeus fully working together. Broadwell later co-authored the biography of Petraeus, with the Vernon Loeb published in January 2012. Writer Joshua Foust has challenged the accuracy of Broadwell's account of the US Destruction of the Afghan Khosrow Sofla village. Soldiers and officers came to his defense, questioning Foust's hatred of Broadwell.
Broadwell is deputy director of the Jebsen Center for Counter-Terrorism Studies at Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. He also works with the FBI Terrorism Combined Task Force.
Broadwell also writes for The New York Times, CNN Security Blog, and The Boston Globe , as well as a publishing book chapter in edited volumes.
In June 2009 and June 2011 Broadwell attended a meeting on Afghan-Pakistan policy at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, which is part of the White House complex.
Personal life
Marriage and family
Broadwell married Dr. Scott Broadwell, an interventional radiologist who graduated from George Washington University School of Medicine in 1996. They live in Charlotte, North Carolina, and have two sons.
The couple met in 2000, when they became captain of the US Army in charge of the U.S. National Ski Patrol. Scott Broadwell was then a doctor and commander of the Mannheim military clinic in Germany and Kranz was finishing the deployment of military intelligence. They married at Heidelberg Castle, with Lieutenant Colonel Ronald Leininger, a Protestant Army chaplain, who headed.
Petraeus Infidelity
Broadwell is also known for his extramarital affair with then-CIA director David Petraeus.
In mid-2012, Broadwell sent a series of emails to Jend. Petraeus, General Mattis, General John Allen, Adm. Harward and Dr. Scott Kelley. At the request of the generals, the FBI began to investigate the email because it contained confidential information about the CIA director's schedule. The Justice Department investigated Broadwell for having confidential information by illegally accessing emails from the CIA director to study the secret schedules of the generals he had emailed. The FBI called Broadwell for interrogation, at which point he acknowledged the illegal access of Petraeus's email. After Broadwell turned his computer around, a secret document was found. The affair was revealed in early November 2012 and was quoted by Petraeus as the reason for his resignation on 9 November.
When news of the scandal became public, Broadwell spent time away from her husband and her remote family in Washington D.C. at the home of his brother, Stephen Kranz. At the same time his home in Charlotte, North Carolina is being sought by the FBI. He then returned home to his family. The media has noted how Scott and Paula Broadwell are trying to get back to normal life.
Following a revelation of his relationship with Petraeus, Broadwell has retained the services of former Clinton Press Secretary Dee Dee Myers with the public relations firm The Glover Park Group. The group's previous founders have served as officials at the Clinton White House and in the campaign of former president Vice President Al Gore.
