History

Lands' End started as a yacht yacht supply company in 1963 in Chicago, Illinois. The company was founded by Gary Comer, along with his partners, 1963 Pan American Games gold medalists Richard Stearns and Robert Halperin, and two Stearns employees. When the business became a success, the business grew into general clothing and home furnishings, and moved to Dodgeville, Wisconsin in 1978. The company was named after the heritage of a sailboat, after Land's End, but the misquoted mark in the company name was a typographical error that Comer can not change, because the promotional materials are already printed.

Lands' End catalog business expanded in the 1980s, riding a wave of mail-order success nationwide. The company expanded its computer system and its customer service operations. In 1986 became a public company. The 1990s saw continued growth, as the company embarked on an international expansion and became the early pioneer of e-commerce, building web sites and "live chat" customer service. In 1992 Lands' End was named among the "100 Best Companies to Work in America".

In 2002, Sears bought the company for $ 2 billion in cash. In addition to operating postal orders and online business and End Inclet Lands 'stores, Sears offers Lands' end clothing line in a large number of its retail stores. In 2012, the company formed an "online partnership" with department stores Debenhams and House of Fraser in the UK.

In November 2009, Lands 'End launched a new line called Lands' End Canvas, which offers a more fashion-oriented casual wear option for men and women.

On December 6, 2013, Sears Holding Corp. announced that it would stop the Lands' End catalog business as a separate company by distributing shares to retailers. Shares of Lands' End started trading on NASDAQ on April 7, 2014.

In 2016, feminist activist Gloria Steinem is featured in the Lands' End catalog. After protests from pro-life customers, the company removed Steinem from their website, stating on their Facebook page: "There was never any intention to raise a divisive political or religious issue, so when some of our customers see a recent promotion that way, we heard it.We sincerely apologize for any offense. "The company then faced further criticism online, this time either from customers still unhappy that Steinem was featured in the first place, and unhappy customers that Steinem was removed.
