Sheela Murthy (born October 12, 1961) is a lawyer, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, perhaps best known as the founder and president of Owings Mills, Maryland based on Murthy Law Firm, which has been classified as one of the immigration law firms leading in the world.
A native of India, Murthy and her husband, photographer and media specialist Vasant Nayak, founded MurthyNayak Foundation to channel their philanthropic contributions to nonprofits serving the needs of women, children and immigrants, especially in education and health care. Murthy has been repeatedly recognized for his philanthropic work. He also serves on the boards of several non-profit organizations in the Baltimore-Washington area and elsewhere in the northeastern United States. He is often a speaker on immigration law, and on entrepreneurship and motivation, leadership, and women's issues.

Murthy was born in Baroda (now known as Vadodara), India in 1961, the second of three daughters. His father, HMS (Srinivas) Murthy, was an officer in the Indian Defense Forces. Education
Murthy was accepted at Stella Maris College in Chennai, where he pursued history and studied political science. He graduated in 1982.
During a lecture at Stella Maris, Murthy said his interest in social justice led to his involvement in the anti-dowry rally and other work to secure the rights of women and girls. It also greatly affects his academic and career choices. Against his parents' wishes, Murthy enrolled in a Bachelor of Laws program at University Law College at Bangalore University.
As a law student, he competed in Jessup's International Moot Court competition and became the overall champion of India, and his team then came second in the world at the Jensup Moot Court competition in New York. Murthy graduated from law school in 1985 over his class of 1,500 students.
While in New York for a pseudo-court competition, Murthy decided to apply for the Master of Laws (LLM) program at Harvard Law School. He spent the next year teaching French at Alliance FranÃÆ'§aise and the Institute of Hotel Management in Bangalore, while he waited for results from his Harvard app. Around the same time, he meets his future husband, Vasant Nayak, when he attends his photo exhibition at Alliance Français.
Murthy was accepted at Harvard, where he worked nights as a security guard to help cover his living expenses. He went on to graduate from the Harvard LLM program in 1987.
Initial career
After Harvard, Murthy practiced the real estate and corporate law at White & amp; Case, the big law firm in New York City. There he lives as a young lawyer, working "12 to 14 hours a day, often seven days a week." As Murthy explains, he works in Manhattan for "emotionally draining," and does not like working for big law firms because "you're nothing but a billable machine."
In 1989, Murthy and her husband Vasant moved to Baltimore, where he continued to practice real estate and business law at a mid-sized law firm. At the same time, Murthy develops expertise in immigration law, forced to learn it as he undergoes a long bureaucratic process - four years, in his case - to secure a green card for himself and her husband. Murthy helped his employer to organize immigration law practice, and did the same when he moved to another company in 1992, where he began to seriously establish his own immigration law practice.
Murthy attributes his interest in immigration law, in part, to the difficulties he faces during his own immigration process. Murthy considers the process to be time-consuming, costly, and discouraging. In May 1994, Murthy left his employer to start his own practice, the immigration lawyer's office: Sheela Murthy's Law Offices. During the first few months, he worked from the dining room table at his home. Eventually he moved to a small office in Owings Mills, Maryland which included a photocopier and receptionist he shared with several other businesses.
The Murthy.com site was launched by Murthy's husband, Vasant Nayak, who, at the time, ran a new graduate program in digital art at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. Murthy was initially skeptical about the value of online communication, but he praised her husband for convincing her to grow her business over the internet. As Murthy explains, "He keeps following me, saying, 'It's a wave of the future! I'll do the job!' And finally I thought, well, if it's free, I think I can live with it I have nothing to lose. "The website was online in the fall of 1994. The company's website is now the most viewed legal website in the United States.
Murthy's company grew rapidly, partly because of early adoption using the Internet for promotional and outreach efforts. Murthy established a significant presence on the web, shared news and information about the immigration process, and built his name and reputation in the process.
Beyond its online presence, Murthy further enhances his status by writing about immigration law and often serves as a commentator for professional publications and seminars. In 1999, Murthy became actively involved with the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), and has taken several leadership roles within the organization over the years.
He admitted that, when he first launched his company, he struggled with employee retention because he was too demanding, expecting his employees to work fourteen to fifteen hours every day of the week. But, as time goes by, he realizes that this does not make sense, and that his employees "... have all the right to return to their children and families."
In 2005, Sheela Murthy's Law Office has grown to the point that the company was known as Murthy's Law Firm. In 2012, the company has more than 80 employees in its offices in Owings Mills, Maryland, and 15 others in its affiliate, Murthy Private Limited, in Chennai and Hyderabad, India. According to Chambers Global, an international lawyer rating agency, the firm is now one of the world's leading immigration law firms.
In 2009, Murthy was named Entrepreneur of the Year by Ernst & amp; Young.
Philanthropy
In 2001, Murthy and her husband founded the MurthyNayak Foundation to channel their financial resources into social transformative projects designed to improve the lives of women, children and immigrants in their home country of India and in their adopted homeland, America Union. Education, health care, nutrition, and the rights of women and children are one of the main focal points of this effort. The MurthyNayak Foundation also provides free media for nonprofits through its production company, Site2Sight, produces websites, documentaries and other promotional materials free of charge for the nonprofits it serves.
Murthy serves on board for a number of organizations, including the American Cancer Treatment Center, Scout Girl from Central Maryland, the Maryland Chamber of Commerce, Stevenson University, and the Harvard Law School Alumni Board of Trustees, among others. He also serves on the boards of United Way International and United Way of Central Maryland, who named him in 2009 as the Philanthropist of the Year. In December 2017, Murthy was appointed president of Washington, D.C chapter of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE).
Awards and honors
The 2013 edition of Corporate Immigration recognizes Murthy as one of the world's largest immigration lawyers. Among other awards, he was named Top 10 Most Influential Marylanders and Top 100 Women's Circle of Excellence Maryland by The Daily Record, a Maryland Business publication. Murthy Company is one of the Top 100 Business Minorities Businesses 2012, and Murthy received the Business Philanthropy Award 2010 from the Baltimore Business Journal. She also received the Small Business Award of the Year 2010 from the Maryland Chamber of Commerce. In 2008, Sheela Murthy was the first woman to become a United Way member of Central Maryland's Million Dollar Roundtable. In 2012, The Daily Record recognizes Murthy as one of "The Most Admired Maryland CEO," and Maryland Entrepreneur Quarterly named the Business Entrepreneur of the Year.
In 2012, The Children's Guild, a nonprofit school for children with special needs, presented Murthy with Sadie's Award for his philanthropy and humanitarian understanding. During the awards ceremony, the children and school staff performed the original music production featuring Murthy's life.
