History

Each week, the show features unrelated romances, usually with comedy rounds. The episodes show different characters, stories, and locations. Performances often feature the same actors playing different characters in many episodes. In addition, the large carved brass bed is a repeating pole in many episodes. Fragile Charles Fox's fragile music score, featuring flutes, lutes and flugelhorn tuned for contemporary pop beat, provides a "love" atmosphere, which ties the story together as a multifaceted romantic comedy each week. For the first season, the theme song of the event was performed by The Cowsills. Beginning in the second season, the same theme song sung by Ron Hicklin Singers, also known as the voice behind the Partridge Family (based on Cowsills), among others, featured brothers John and Tom Bahler (billed as The Charles Fox Singers).

The second version of this theme runs for the rest of the series, as well as on most episodes that are prepared for syndication. The title comes from the 1961 Italian comedy film titled Divorzio all'italiana (Divorzio all'italiana), who received an Academy Award nomination in 1962 for Best Director for Pietro Germi and Best Actor for star Marcello Mastroianni. The film was later falsified in 1967 by Divorce, American Style, starring Dick Van Dyke. The snowclone "(xxx), (nationality) Style" became a small cultural capture phrase as the 1960s evolved.

The original series is also known for the 10-to-20-inch "joke clips" that silently read among the flagship segments. This regular group features future Rockford File candidates, Stuart Margolin, prominent female candidate Phyllis Davis and young character James Hampton, known to television viewers from era as the Personal Dobbs of the TV series F-Troops . These clips allow the event to be paired to the required length without adding the main segment. They generally consist of visual comedies that are arrogant and tumultuous.

During the first four years at ABC, Love, American Style was very popular with viewers and received a decent rating, although it was never among the top 30 shows on Nielsens. Over the course of several seasons it is part of the powerhouse line of the ABC Friday night program that includes The Brady Bunch Partridge Room and Space 222 and Odd Couple .

Some event segments also serve as pilots for the proposed television series, either as actual pilots that also function as segments, or as segments that will be changed as pilots after the fact. Many never made it past the testing phase, but two produced a series of:

  • On February 25, 1972, the show aired an episode with segments titled "Love and the Television Set", a story about Richie Cunningham, her family, and her friends. The premise and character will later be used for the Happy Days television series, and this episode will later be recognized as the de facto pilot for the series (originally produced as a pilot for New Family in Town , who has not been picked up). For syndication, this segment is entitled "Love and the Happy Days". Happy Days , in turn, launched a large franchise of spin-offs into the 1980s.
  • Two weeks earlier, on February 11, 1972, the event featured an animated segment, "Ancient Love and Father". It will be the pilot for the first syndicated animation series run by Hanna-Barbera, , who debuted that fall and broadcast for three seasons.

The show's executive producer is Arnold Margolin, the brother of actor Stuart Margolin, who is the main actor in the series. Stuart is probably best known for his character Angel on the 1970s TV detective show The Rockford Files .

In the early autumn of 1973-1974, the ratings for Love, American Style and Room 222 have dropped dramatically. As a result, both events were canceled in mid-season. The series received several Emmy nominations, including two for Best Comedy Series for 1969-70 and 1970-71. The event then becomes the standard daylight in syndication, because it's easily edited for up to half an hour by the precise braid of clips with the main segment, which effectively makes nine seasons out of five. This allows heavy stripping.

New version

A decade after the show began, the new version aired on ABC's 1984 noon schedule entitled New Love, American Style , but was canceled after a few months due to low ratings against The Right Price on CBS. The third edition, starring Melissa Joan Hart, among others, was shot as a pilot for the 1998-1999 television season, but was not ordered to be a draw.
