Political position
Wasserman Schultz is pro-choice on some issues, supports arms control laws, and is a supporter of the LGBT community. He started the 2007 Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act. In 2011, Wasserman Schultz was one of 23 co-sponsors of H.R. 3261, Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA).
Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and payday loan
In December 2015, Wasserman Schultz was one of 24 co-sponsors of H.R. 4018, written by GOP Congressman Dennis A. Ross, who will delay the application of CFPB regulations. "Wasserman Schultz is one of a dozen Florida representatives who have sponsored a bipartisan law that will delay the Consumer Financial Protection payroll rules every two years and cancel" deferred payment transactions "in states with Florida-like laws. has drawn criticism for trying to postpone the rule.
The creation of the CFPB is authorized by the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, whose share in 2010 is the legislative response to the 2007-08 financial crisis and the next Great Recession.
Terri Schiavo's Case
During Terri Schiavo's case, she is one of the strongest opponents of congressional intervention. He publicly accused President George W. Bush of hypocrisy for signing the 1999 Bill as Texas Governor allowing health care workers to remove life support for severely ill patients if patients or families are unable to pay medical bills. During the debate Wasserman Schultz pointed out that the Texas law signed by Bush's governor allows the caregiver to withhold treatment "at a point of futility has been reached and there is no longer hope for survival or additional health care measures used to sustain life.Ã,... [this] seems to contradict its position today. "Cox News Service reports that" Texas law is meant to control in cases where medical teams and patient representatives disagree on treatment. "In Schiavo's case, the medical team and husband of Schiavo agree that there is hope for improvement in conditions, determined by a lower court to become a 'persistent vegetative state'. "Wasserman Schultz also cites the case of a six-month-old Texas baby whose life support has been removed.
Middle East Conflict
While his predecessor and his mentor, Peter Deutsch, was "one of the most hawkish members of Congress on Middle East issues", Wasserman Schultz, who took his place in Florida's 20th district, the "Broward County Jewish Region" more centric.. During 2005 he spoke in favor of President George W. Bush's proposal to provide financial assistance to the Palestinian Authority both in additional proposals and the 2006 budget. He said:
We want to continue to focus on ensuring that... policies that come from Washington continue to encourage and sustain and nurture the peace process. In the first four years [Bush], there was a lack of leadership coming from the government. I know many people in the Jewish community are happy with the president's position in Israel, but the way I think, there is no leadership.... So I am glad to see there is little involvement and involvement of the administration.
Wasserman Schultz is a supporter of Israel. He defended his party against the suggestion that the anti-Israeli Democratic Party, saying:
I will pile up the Democratic caucus position on support for Israel against Republican caucuses every day of the week and become much more confident - and the Jewish community should be much more confident - in the stewardship of the Democrats of Israel than the Republicans, especially if you compare the underlying reasons for support both groups for Israel. The far-right group of Republican interests in Israel is not because they strongly support the existence of a Jewish state and ensure that Jews have a place we can call home. It has references to Armageddon and biblical references that interest them more. So I will encourage members of the Jewish community to put their faith in the Democrats, because our support for Israel is generally for the right reasons.
Presidential signing statement
Wasserman Schultz supports the use of allocations for the future control of the statement of the signing of the presidency as developed as part of the question during the session of the House of Justice Committee on the constitutional borders of executive power July 26, 2008.
Month of American Jewish Heritage
Wasserman Schultz is the first Jewish women's congress of the state of Florida.
He and Senator Arlen Specter are the driving forces behind a resolution stating every Month of Jewish Jewish Heritage in May. The annual obedience was created to recognize "the achievements of American Jews and the important role played by members of the Jewish community in the development of American culture". Obedience is modeled after the Black History Month, Hispanic Heritage Month and Women History Month. Wasserman Schultz envisioned "class instruction, public ceremonies and broadcast announcements," stating "There are generations of children who grew up with faded memories of what happened during World War II or even the understanding of who is Jewish or their culture and traditions. comes with tolerance. "The bill introduces obedience pass unanimously in both House and Senate and signed by President George W. Bush. Wasserman Schultz said of the proclamation "This is a historic event. The next generation will have the opportunity to live without anti-Semitism through a greater understanding and awareness of the important role played by American Jews in US history The Moon of American Jewish Heritage is a reality because people are gathering today in this room. "
The move was criticized by Gary Cass, executive director of the United States Reclamation Center for Christ, a conservative Christian organization based in Fort Lauderdale, who refuses to "teach Jewish history without discussing religious practices and values," saying "We can not seem to have any discussion who is honest about the American Christian roots ". He wondered, "How much tolerance will be done [Congressman Wasserman Schultz] for the Christian Heritage month?" He replied that the situation was different, that "Judaism is unique, because it is culture and religion," and that he does not support "teaching any religion in public schools." The congressman's father, Larry Wasserman, said that although his daughter was not active in the Jewish community before entering politics, he had "established relationships with Jewish groups as parliamentarians, helped to form the Jewish National Democratic Council and served on the regional council of the American Jewish Congress. "
financial crisis 2008
Wasserman Schultz voted on September 29, 2008, backed the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, and on October 3, 2008, supported a revised version of the law.
Hates crime
During the April 2009 Justice Judiciary Committee hearing on the 2009 Hate Crime Prevention Act, fellow Floridian Tom Rooney, a former Army officer of the JAG US Army Corps, introduced amendments that would make an attack on military veterans as a crime of hatred. Wasserman Schultz told the amendment:
I'm from a state, like Mr. Rooney, which includes and represents the district that includes the real victims. I represent very large - one of the largest gay population in the United States. One of the largest Jewish population in the United States. My region - our region - has a huge African-American population. This really underestimates the respect we ought to have for these groups to show that members of the armed forces are somehow systematically victimized by hate crime.
Death of Daniel Wultz
Wasserman Schultz became a vocal supporter for the family of Daniel Wultz, a constituent of his congressional district involved in legal action against Bank of China over his alleged role in financing a terrorist attack that killed 16-year-old teenager from Weston, Florida, in 2006.
In August 2013, Wasserman Schultz told Miami Herald: "In South Florida, we all know very well about the tragic circumstances surrounding the cowardly terrorist attacks that took the innocent life of Daniel Wultz, I have worked, hands on the hands of the Wultz family and the state of Israel to ensure that every and every person involved in this terrorist activity, including the Bank of China, pays for their crimes so that justice can be served. "
On May 1, 2014, along with House Majority Leader, Representative Eric Cantor (R-VA), Wasserman Schultz hosted the Wultz family on the US Capitol in the National Day of Prayer.
Identity theft
On February 15, 2013, Wasserman Schultz introduced the Stop Tax Identity Theft and Identity Theft Officer of 2013 (H.R. 744; Congress 113) into the House. The bill will increase penalties for identity thieves in the United States and change the definition of identity theft to include businesses and organizations, not just individuals.
Ganja
Wasserman Schultz opposed the 2014 medical marijuana amendment in Florida that failed to account for 60% of the votes required to amend the Florida Constitution. He angered medical marijuana activists and big Democratic donors on this and his comparison with medical marijuana pharmacies to a "pill factory", which overly prescribed and gave excessive painkillers to patients with dubious symptoms. After Wasserman Schultz expressed interest in running for the United States Senate in the 2016 election, medical marijuana activists vowed to thwart his ambitions. Lawyers and donors John Morgan said that his position on medical marijuana "disqualifies him from the [Democratic Senate] nomination... his position denies the compassion of both severe and chronic pain."
In response, in February 2015, Wasserman Schultz staff emailed Morgan, offering to change his position on medical marijuana if Morgan would stop criticizing him. Morgan declined his offer and released an email to Politico , calling it a "bully". Wasserman Schultz initially refused to comment, later denied that his office even sent an email. Morgan replied: "What Debbie left behind in her impulse was a very clear message that her potential support of a new [proposed vote for 2016] amendment was based on me drawing my comments to Politico Pistol control
In 2018, Wasserman Schultz sponsored a bill to "strengthen school security and security", which required two-thirds of the vote for the part, given it brought about an accelerated process. The House of Representatives voted 407-10 to approve the bill, which would "provide $ 50 million annually for a new federal grant program to train students, teachers and law enforcement on how to see and report signs of gun violence". Called STOP (Student, Teacher, and Prevention Officer) of the School Violence Act, it will "develop anonymous phones and online systems where people can report threats of violence." At the same time, it will authorize $ 25 million for schools to upgrade and harden their security, such as installing new locks, lights, metal detectors and panic buttons. "A separate spending bill would be needed to give money to the grant program.
Political campaign
2004
In 2004, Wasserman Schultz's mentor, Peter Deutsch, resigned from his congressional seat to make an unsuccessful road to the Senate seat of fellow Democrat Bob Graham. Wasserman Schultz was unaffected in the Democratic primary elections held to fill Deutsch seats. His Republican opponent was Margaret Hostetter, a realtor who never held public office. The 20th so demanding the Democrats that Hostetter faced an almost impossible chance in November. However, he earned a bad reputation for his attack on Wasserman Schultz. For example, the Hostetter campaign site criticized Wasserman Schultz for protesting a photo of an American flag with a Christian cross on it that is on display in the office of a secretary in a government building. Hostetter wrote, "Choose Margaret Hostetter for the November 2nd Congress and send a clear message that Americans respect and support... the fundamental role that Christianity has in the formation of our great nation, our rights are from God, not the state."
Wasserman Schultz won, taking 70.2% to hostetter 29.8%. However, Hostetter only spent about $ 30,000 to get 30% of the vote (compared to Wasserman Schultz $ 1.2 million). When Wasserman Schultz was sworn in on January 4, 2005, he chose to use the Hebrew Bible, or Tanakh. Since House Speaker Dennis Hastert only has a Christian Bible, Tanakh's copy was borrowed by Hastert's staff from Congressman Gary Ackerman for this purpose. (This was raised two years later during the controversy of the Qur'anic oath of the 110th Congress of the United States.)
2006
Wasserman Schultz was not elected to re-election in 2006.
2008
In 2008, Wasserman Schultz won a re-election bid by defeating independent candidate Margaret Hostetter and Socialist Marc Luzietti.
He announced his support for Hillary Clinton for his 2008 party presidential nomination, and in June 2007 was selected as one of Clinton's national campaign co-seats. After Senator Barack Obama became a Democrat candidate, he supported him and joined Senator Ken Salazar of Colorado and Representative Artur Davis of Alabama for a second nomination at the 2008 Democratic National Convention.
At CBS Face the Nation, he declared Sarah Palin unprepared for the Vice Presidency. "He does not know anything... Quite honestly, the interviews I see and which Americans see on Thursday and Friday are the same as when I did not read a book in high school and had to read CliffsNotes and phone in my report", Wasserman Schultz said Palin's interview with ABC Charlie Gibson last week. "He's Cliff-noting his performance so far." Wasserman Schultz was also appointed co-chair of the congressional Red-Democratic congress group. The controversy arose in March 2008 when he announced that he would not be able to campaign against representatives of South Florida Republican Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Mario Diaz-Balart, and now-retired Lincoln Diaz-Balart because of his good friendship with them. Wasserman Schultz and Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) are both in LGBT Equality Caucus where Wasserman Schultz is Vice Chairman. Ros-Lehtinen has been the only Republican in the 112 member caucus since 2013.
2010
Wasserman Schultz was challenged by Republican candidates Karen Harrington and Independent Stanley Blumenthal and Bob Kunst. Florida Whig candidate Clayton Schock ran for author. Wasserman Schultz won over Harrington, 60.1% to 38.1%.
2012
After the 2010 census, Wasserman Schultz district was re-numbered as the 23rd District and driven further to Miami-Dade County, taking most of Miami Beach and parts of Miami itself. He again faced Republican businesswoman Karen Harrington Wasserman Schultz won by 63.2% percent of the vote, to 35.6% for Harrington. When he was sworn in for his fourth term, he became the first white Democrat to represent most of Miami since 1993.
2014
In the election, Wasserman Schultz beat Republic, Joe Kaufman, Republican candidate, 62.7% to 37.3%.
âââ ⬠<â ⬠<2016
After redistricting the court-ordered in 2015, Wasserman Schultz lost much of his share of Miami-Dade County, including parts of Miami and Miami Beach.
Economist and law professor Tim Canova challenged Wasserman Schultz on August 30, 2016, the primary election of the Florida Democratic Party. He is supported by Senator Bernie Sanders, the Democratic presidential candidate for President in 2016. Wasserman Schultz won the main vote with 57 percent of the vote.
On August 8, 2016, after the WikiLeaks Democratic National Committee's email announcement, Canova filed a Federal Election Commission (FEC) offense against a lawsuit against Wasserman Schultz accusing it of "interfering" with his campaign, stating that on his behalf "... DNC paid the national team , senior communications and political professionals a large sum of money for their consulting services and Wasserman Schultz for Congressional Campaigns utilize this service for free. "A spokesman for Wasserman Schultz said the complaint was baseless and that it was" based on stolen and cherished information ".
In the election, Wasserman Schultz defeated Republican candidate Joe Kaufman with 56.7% to 40.5% of the vote.
Chairman of the Democratic National Committee
On 5 April 2011, Vice President Joe Biden announced that Wasserman Schultz was President Barack Obama's choice to replace Tim Kaine as the 52nd Chair of the Democratic National Committee. Until he assumed office, the current DNC ââVice Chairman Donna Brazile served as the temporary Chair of the Democratic National Committee. Wasserman Schultz was confirmed at the DNC meeting held on May 4, 2011, in Washington, D.C.
During the appearance at Face the Nation, Wasserman Schultz said, "The Republicans have plans to end Medicare as we know. What they will do is take people younger than 55 years today and let them know, 'You know what ?, Go ahead and find private health insurance in the health care insurance market. ' ". Four non-partisan fact checkers called his claim wrong. He was later criticized for his comments about Washington Watch with Roland Martin, where he said, "You have a Republican Party, who wants to drag us all the way back to Jim Crow's law and literally - and very transparently - blocking access to voting for voters who are more likely to vote for Democratic candidates than Republican candidates. " The next day, he stated that "Jim Crow is the wrong analogy to use".
In 2012, many Obama advisers questioned the move to choose Wasserman Schultz as its DNC chairman, whom they consider too partisan on television. A study of internal focus on Obama's top campaign popularity replaces Wasserman Schultz's rank at the bottom. In February 2015, quoting anonymous sources, reported that Wasserman Schultz had set up supporters in 2013 to portray any decision by Barack Obama to replace him as chairman of the DNC as "anti-woman and anti-Semitic".
Wasserman Schultz was also criticized for what he called "often absent" from Congress. In 2011, he lost 62 congressional votes, placing him on 45 of 535 lost Congress votes. He has been criticized for appearing frequently on MSNBC. Dylan Ratigan accused him of coming to his show and just "doing point talks". He later apologized for his "very rude" behavior.
2016 presidential election
Clinton's opponents, Martin O'Malley and Bernie Sanders, separately criticized Wasserman Schultz's decision to schedule only six debates in the 2016 presidential election, fewer than the previous election cycle, and the time of debate.
Some of Wasserman Schultz's actions that the news covered during the primaries were: had reduced the debate schedule, not invited former DNC Vice Chairman Tulsi Gabbard to the first Democratic primary debate, in a fight to close Sanders campaign access to the DNC server and thereby halt their campaign until a large backslash causing him to cancel it, defended the superdelegation system used to signal to the support base that Clinton would become a nominee, quietly overturning Obama's 2008 ban on donations to the DNC from corporate lobbyists and PAC and thus opening the way to the then Hillary Victory Fund reported by Politico have laundered money for their campaign and the DNC has hidden details of its deal with the Clinton campaign and wrongly accused Sanders' violent supporters at the Nevada Convention.
In May, MSNBC's Mika Brzezinski asked Schultz to resign over DNC's bias against Bernie Sanders's campaign. The 2016 Democratic National e-mails leak reveals that Schultz was furious with negative coverage of his actions in the media, and he emailed Chuck Todd that his coverage "should be stopped". Describing the coverage as "LAST straw," he ordered the DNC's communications director to summon MSNBC president Phil Griffin to request an apology from Brzezinski.
Resignation
After WikiLeaks published an e-mail from the Democratic National Committee stating that DNC ââstaff and some Wasserman Schultz themselves have expressed support for Hillary Clinton in the main campaign while criticizing Bernie Sanders's campaign, Wasserman Schultz submits his resignation as head of the DNC, to be effective as from the closing of the nominating convention at Philadelphia. According to a report on The Washington Post, Wasserman Schultz strongly rejected the advice he returned, requiring a phone call from President Barack Obama to finally force his resignation.
After a speech at the convention before the Florida delegation where Wasserman Schultz was "booed off stage" the DNC announced he would not open the convention. He was then appointed as the honorary president of Clinton's "50 states" campaign.
